Message from the Gathering Chair: Anna Mansbridge
Plans for the 5th National Gathering "Forms Unfolding: Dancing in the Emerald City" are in full swing. You won't want to miss out on this unique daCi offering, where in three action–packed days you will dance to your heart's content. You will experience many different forms of dance, create dances and make new friends with people of all ages from all over the USA. If you love to dance, and want to share your passion with others that feel the same way, then please join us in Seattle June 26–29 at the beautiful University of Washington campus.
Check-in will open on Thursday June 26 at 1:30pm at McMahon Hall, one of the dorms located on campus. At 5:15pm we will commence the Gathering with a celebratory Meet and Great Pizza Party. We will mingle on the leafy patio of Haggett Hall, greeting old friends and making new acquaintances. We will then proceed to Meany Studio Theater for an official welcome from Professor of Dance and Divisional Dean of Arts at the University of Washington, Betsy Cooper, and then witness a performance of a specially created collaborative work by Seattle's Kaleidoscope Dance Company and Utah's Children's Dance Theater. Then we will all dance together before heading off to get a good night's sleep to prepare us for the busy days ahead.
Our dancing days will begin with multi-generational classes, where each participant will be assigned to a particular group. We will warm-up and explore vocabulary and tools to be used in our dance making. Two master teachers, expert in facilitating the vibrant process of dance making, will lead each group. These same multi–generational classes will meet again in the afternoon, where forms will unfold in the creation of unique dance pieces. These pieces will be shared on Sunday afternoon at the intimate Meany Studio Theater on the University of Washington campus.
Mid–morning the skills classes will take place. Class placement will be determined by age. In these classes we will build coordination, control, strength, creativity, concentration and community. In the afternoon there will be two sessions offered where participants can choose which classes to take. In the Cultural classes, we will learn dances from such varied cultures as Japan, Scotland, Poland and Native America. In the Options session, classes to choose from are Classical Ballet, Hip Hop, Orff Music and Dance, Writing Stories, and Pilates/Body Conditioning
On Friday June 27 and Saturday June 28 performances will take place at Meany Studio Theater by participants, and invited local groups. The choreography presented will address the conference theme "Forms Unfolding: Dancing in the Emerald City." These performances provide a wonderful opportunity to share the dance making we do back home with a national community. It is always a delight to see what others are creating. Further details about performance application and technical requirements are available http://daciusa.org/seattle.php?choreography.
On the last Sunday evening of the Gathering, after the final sharing, we will gather at Haggett Hall for a sumptuous banquet provided by the University of Washington catering company, Bay Laurel Catering. We will then dance some more. Departure day is Monday June 30. Participants may decide they want to stay on a few days and enjoy all that Seattle and the surrounding area has to offer. If you are staying in the dorms, you can come two days early and/or stay two days later than the four conference days.
